Death and the Maiden

Young Ukrainian Art

04.11.2022 – 15.01.2023

The Kunstforum Wien has invited Lizaveta German and Maria Lanko, curators of this year’s Ukrainian contribution to the Biennale di Venezia, to curate a presentation with Ukrainian artists for the 2022 autumn exhibition. It is conceived to reflect the effects of the war in the Ukraine on our society in Europe, with a major focus on themes like remembrance, trauma and the fragility of the body.

Lizaveta German and Maria Lanko are a team of curators who together with the Swiss film director Marc Wilkins founded the exhibition platform gallery The Naked Room in Kyiv.
The Naked Room is noted as one of the most fascinating addresses for the young and vital Ukrainian art scene. Many of the artists represented here were nominated for the prestigious Pinchuk Art Prize or as its award winners.

The two curators describe their project for the tresor as follows:
“The show doesn’t address the topic of Russia-Ukrainian war in a straightforward way. Yet, it brings sharp thoughts, experiences, observations and feelings shaped by the new life mode, unveiled by the war and its ongoing consequences for citizens of Ukraine and European society in large. The story told by the show presents a new sensibility towards the ever relevant subjects of memory, trauma, fragility of the body and bonds between life and death.
