The starting point for composition, the latest project by Andrés Ramirez Gaviria, born in 1975 in Bogotá, Colombia, is the group of “transatlantic paintings” created by Piet Mondrian between 1935 and 1940. Gaviria translates these 17 world-famous works into an audiovisual installation, critically commenting on the phenomenon of abstraction in the history of modern art, as well as its relationship to digital culture.

composition consists of the digital recording, archiving, and mixing of all vertical and horizontal lines from Mondrian’s paintings. Presented in a wide horizontal format, the projected lines move at a continuous speed and in chronological order from left to right and back again. When two identical lines meet, their speed and direction of movement change. Through this programmed interaction, the lines, moving through space, gradually lose their original “order.” A progressively unpredictable sequence of visual patterns emerges. The visual experience is accompanied by sound: a series of noises and sonic fragments from George Antheil’s Jazz Sonata (1922), triggered at the moment the lines collide.

This project is presented as part of the Latin American festival Onda Latina.
