LET THE CHILDREN PLAY

23.10.2014 - 16.11.2014

LET THE CHILDREN PLAY is an initiative of the photographer Lukas Maximilian Hüller in collaboration with the artist Hannes Seebacher. The projects explore the visualization of values, inspired by the United Nations guidelines on basic human rights, in particular children’s rights.

In cooperation with numerous artists from around the world, a wide range of projects emerged that focus on the subject of “play.” The point of departure was the painting The Children’s Games by Pieter Bruegel the Elder from 1560, which Lukas M. Hüller restaged in various countries of the world in elaborate photographic settings.

The photographs are highly complex compositions, pretend snapshots that are rich in stories, meaning, and detail, embedded in real landscapes.

Lukas M. Hüller’s photographs are created over weeks spent on various continents, in mutually fruitful and playful collaboration with hundreds of children actively involved in production in the way of workshops.

The exhibition LET THE CHILDREN PLAY shows not only the striking large-format photographs, but also documentary photographs, production design, and film documents, as well as portraits of the participating children.

The initiative would like to promote an awareness of children’s rights, especially the right to play and participation in cultural life. It invites us to join in a fantastic journey of discovery that reveals not only the enormous wealth and parallels of play and culture on various continents and the beauty and pleasures of childhood, but also the problems and difficult living conditions of the world’s youth.
