Im Frühjahr 2022 widmet das Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien dem britischen Künstler David Hockney erstmals in Österreich eine umfassende Werkschau. Hockney, einer der facettenreichsten und einflussreichsten Künstler der Gegenwart, experimentiert seit über 60 Jahren mit den Medien Malerei, Zeichnung und Grafik.
Neben seinen ikonischen Swimming Pools nimmt die Ausstellung Hockneys präzise Untersuchungen der Landschaft, des Portraits und des Aktes in den Blick, die stets verknüpft mit der eigenen Biografie und Identität sind: So setzt sich Hockney immer wieder mit queerer Erotik auseinander – auch zu einer Zeit, als Homosexualität in Großbritannien noch als Straftat galt. In seinen Landschaftsbildern kehrt Hockney immer wieder zu seinen Wurzeln im Norden Englands zurück; diese oft an die Grenzen der Gegenständlichkeit weisenden Arbeiten stehen im spannungsvollen Kontrast zur modernistischen Architektur und cleanen Ästhetik der amerikanischen Westküste, einem zweiten Lebensmittelpunkt Hockneys, dem er ein malerisches Denkmal gesetzt hat. Zwischen dem Konkreten und dem Abstrakten oszillierend analysiert Hockney unterschiedliche Ausdrucksformen einer Erfahrung des Sehens. Mit The First Marriage (1962), Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy (1970–1971) und My Parents (1977) reisen Hauptwerke des Künstlers aus der Sammlung der Tate in Großbritannien nach Wien.
Die Schau legt darüber hinaus einen Fokus auf das umfassende druckgrafische Werk David Hockneys, das er seit Beginn seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn konsequent weiterentwickelt. Im Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien werden Meilensteine der Druckgrafik, wie die RadierungszyklenA Rake's Progress (1961–1963) und Cavafy (1966) präsentiert.
Die Ausstellung entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit der Tate.
